Jungle Village Resort, Ao Nang

Introduction

This resort, which has over recent years moved steadily up-market, is currently one of Ao Nang’s best resorts for families and for those seeking tranquility and who don’t mind the resort’s significant distance from the beach and town.

In the impeccably manicured grounds, beautifully crafted wooden salas (open-sided huts) are dotted around the attractive pool. These salas contain seating with sloping back-rests for maximum comfort, and are perfect spots in which to relax with a book or a game of backgammon, while keeping half an eye on the children running around the grounds and playing in the immaculate if rather small pool.

The resort is aptly named, as huge fan palms compete for the eye’s attention with banana trees, red palms, coconut palms and other obscure species of flora, all set  amidst smart lawns framed by hedges more carefully trimmed than the average beard. As at May 2009 there were some renovation works going on. The estimated completion date is mid-June, but this could well be a “Thai-time” estimate and should not be relied upon, contact us and we’ll give you a progress update.

Whilst the resort is over 3 km from the beach, it operates a free day-time tuk tuk shuttle service. Evening tuk tuk rides in the Jungle Village tuk tuk cost THB 100 per party (not THB 50 per person). It really isn’t too much of a hardship to need to ride 5 minutes to the beach or town in a tuk tuk, in fact many visitors, particularly children, really enjoy the experience. The major benefit of doing so is that the visitor gets better value accommodation, and a more peaceful atmosphere.

Restaurant

The food here is much better than at most other resorts in a comparable price bracket, and is enhanced by the Danish resident owner’s influence. A Danish style breakfast at Jungle Village, with fried potatoes and pressed pork roll, is a great start to the day. Western residents in Ao Nang often eat breakfast at this resort. As well as serving a great breakfast, the Thai food here is of a good standard, though many visitors prefer to dine out in Ao Nang.

Accommodation

The resort has a wide range of accommodation options. Some of the rooms are not in one hundred percent pristine condition, and are marred by the odd slight stain on a wall or cushion, but only the most particular of guests will be displeased.  In the resort’s one year-old annex, 100 metres away, there are two great apartments suitable for extended families, a pool villa, and half a dozen smaller apartments suitable for couples. These are all grouped, but not crowded, around the annex’s own pool. All accommodations in the annex are in immaculate condition.
