Phra Nang Inn, Ao Nang

Independent Review

Prices & Booking

Stop press April 2010 - the renovations are all complete, and a second pool has been installed.

The Phra Nang Inn hotel is located on the beach at the corner of Ao Nang’s  two biggest shopping streets. Click here for a map. The lobby is at the street corner, so you can’t hear any traffic in the rooms, only the sound of the waves.

The resort, which was renovated in 2007 and again in 2009, is located very close to the beach, just 10 metres away across a tiny and mainly pedestrian acess road. The resort is quiet and yet within easy range of all Ao Nang’s copious amenities. The exterior areas show signs of wear, but the rooms are in good condition.

Whilst the rooms are immaculate inside, some of the rooms’ outdoor furniture is a bit worn and could use re-sanding and re-varnishing. Some of the restaurant’s wicker furniture, whilst not exactly scruffy, can’t be described as immaculate either. It is a small resort and there are no green areas for children to run around in, so it is maybe not the best possible choice for families with young children, unless they are going to spend their days on the beach, on day-trips, or in the attractive pool. Parents can sit in the shady restaurant / bar area with a book or a drink, and still keep an eye on their children on the beach.

The restaurant gets mixed reviews on sites such as If you like quality bread with your breakfast, book through us and, in addition to hopefully an unbeatable price, we will deliver a fresh quality loaf to you on arrival. The restaurant is OK for lunchtime snacks, but its best to stick to the Thai food or a club sandwich, as more complex Western fare will probably disappoint. Most guests dine out – see the map for restaurants, nightlife and other amenities.

The reception area is currently being rebuilt, which will supposedly be complete in July 2009. Thai resorts are notoriously optimistic (or sometimes even downright dishonest) about construction completion dates, so if you are interested in booking this resort contact us so we can give you an update – the resort is only 300 metres from our office, so one of us will pop over and take a look. We can’t promise that what the resort tell us will happen, but we can take a look and see what the state of play is.

The resort’s attractive spa, around which are dotted bowls of jasmine flowers floating on water, is unusually competitively-priced for a hotel spa, with massage prices starting at only THB 350 / hour. Use of the steam and sauna room is free for guests who have a massage.

Deluxe - Spa Wing

These almost new and immaculate units are good value for money, for people who want to stay near the beach. The comfortable day-bed can be converted into a proper extra bed (no folding-away extra beds are used here) and can accommodate an adult Western male (even one as big as this travel writer, who's eaten a few too many coconut curries recently).
Each unit has a shower and separate toilet, and a large hot tub in the bedroom. While the decor won't be to too many people's liking, it's not so bad as to be actively upsetting - the pink floral bed-spreads will more likely provoke a laugh than a headache.
The terraces are fairly small. From some of these terraces there is a small seaview, from others (like the one pictured here) the view is completely blocked off by trees, making them a little gloomy.
It's best to get one of the units with a seaview, not so much because the view is so great (it's not) but because it's good to let as much ligth as possible into the room, so it's not gloomy. This room type has no connecting pairs, but the 'Deluxe - Beach Wing' (see below) does.

Deluxe - Beach Wing

These units are more tastefully decorated than the Deluxe Spa Wing units. If a Deluxe Beach Wing unit is available, there is no point in choosing a Deluxe - Spa Wing unit - only book a Deluxe - Spa Wing unit is the Deluxe - Beach Wing units ara all full. The wood floors in the Beach Wing units are only a few millimetres thick, but attractive and in good shape.
These rooms come in connecting pairs. A pair of these form one of the best family options in Ao Nang, particularly if the visitor can get a pair on the ground floor. From these ground floor units parents can supervise their children in the pool, while relaxing in considerable comfort on their terrace.
The rooms are on 2 floors, the ground floor and the 1st floor. The 1/f rooms are less desirable for families, but are a better bet for couples, as they are quieter. The rooms come in two rows, one facing south and the other facing north. The southfacing rooms get the best views. The closer to the beach a room is, the better the view.

None of the connecting rooms are particularly close to the beach so, while some of them have a small se-view, it's not much to write home about. If you take an extra bed, it will be a foldaway bed, so not particularly comfortable, but no problem for a child.

‘Phra Nang Suite’

This suite has a fantastic sea-view, but is a bit odd-looking, due to the strange shape of the kitchen / dining room. There are two separate balconies, both offering comfortable loungers and affording good sea-views.

‘Beach-front Deluxe’

There are only two of these superb rooms in the hotel. They have fabulous seaviews right from the bed and are well-appointed, clean and tastefully decorated. A great choice for a couple, whether on honeymoon or not, this room is highly recommended. These rooms are the best things about this hotel.

‘Junior Suite ’

These two-bedroom suites are one of Ao Nang's best choices for families. Immaculate and tastefully decorated, they offer good value for money, and are very near to the beach, restaurants and to both of the resort's swimming pools. One of the bedrooms has a double bed. The other has a single bed, plus a daybed suitable for a child but not an adult. The room rate includes breakfast for 2 people, plus occupancy by 3 adults and a child. The rate assumes that either the 4th person will sleep either in the double bed (making 3 in a bed) or will share the single bed (making 2 in a bed). The day-bed will not be made up to sleep on every night. However, if the visitor brings a small sheet and/or blanket, there is nothing to stop the 4th person sleeping on the day-bed, for no extra charge except breakfast. If the above arrangements are unsatisfactory then you can pay for an extra bed, the cost of which includes a daily breakfast.

There are 3 Junior Suites at the resort. One has no seaview, one has a tiny seaview and the third has a really rather good seaview - we know which room has the best view, and can request it for you. While we can't guarantee you'll get it, in practice you are almost certain to, as the big hotel booking websites don't know which the best room numbers are, as they aren't based 200 metres away like us. The big sites thus don't request the rooms that we want, and our customers are thus almost certain to get the room we request. The reason we can't guarantee that you will get the room requested is that, in less than 0.1 % of all our Ao Nang hotel bookings, a Thai VIP walks in and takes the room we have requested.

‘Family Studio’

These are not very tastefully decorated, but not complete eyesores either. The Junior Suites are a better family choice.

The above rates are net per room per night and inclusive of all taxes, service charge and breakfast for 2 people. If more then 2 people occupy the unit, the extra people need to pay for breakfast (THB 150 for a child, THB 250 for an adult).

Low Season Special - Stay for 3 nights, pay for 2 nights. You need to pay for breakfasts on your free nights, plus an for the extra bed, if you have one.

Compulsory gala dinner :
Compulsory gala dinner on 24 Dec 09 is Baht 2,000 per adult and Baht 1,000 per child
Compulsory gala dinner on 31 Dec 09 is Baht 2,500 per adult and Baht 1,250 per child
